A CENTURY OF AQUATIC ART

Born from the creative imagination of René Lalique in 1913, the small crystal fish has evolved from a simple decorative object into one of the most recognizable icons of the Lalique brand. Originally conceived during a pivotal period when René was transitioning from a master jeweller to a revolutionary glassmaker, the fish sculpture was initially produced in glass. Its launch coincided with the opening of his glassworks in Combs-la-Ville, marking the beginning of an era where Lalique would bring high-art aesthetics to a wider audience through specialized industrial techniques.

The history of the piece is rooted in René Lalique’s deep obsession with the natural world, a theme that defined the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. By 1913, Lalique had already perfected the use of the lost-wax casting process, which allowed him to capture the fluid, organic lines of aquatic life with startling precision. The fish sculpture, originally released in a striking turquoise glass, was designed to play with light in a way that mimicked the shimmering surface of water. This focus on transparency and relief became the signature Lalique look, transforming a static object into a dynamic study of movement.

This non-exhaustive colour wheel shows many of Lalique's fish colours. Many seasonal colours were only in production for short periods of time, making them more prized amongst collectors. New colours are always introduced as Lalique's craftsmen explore new crystal creations. Click here to explore Lalique's unique crystal colours.

A KALEIDOSCOPE OF LUXURY

In the broader context of the art world, the Lalique fish is significant as a pioneer of accessible luxury. While many of his contemporaries focused solely on unique, priceless commissions, Lalique took pride in his ability to create high-quality pieces produced in series that maintained the integrity of fine art. The fish sculpture embodies this philosophy; it is a miniature masterpiece that allowed collectors to own a piece of French decorative history without needing the budget of a museum. Its enduring popularity over a century later proves that his vision of merging art with industry was a resounding success.

Today, the fish sculpture remains a staple of the crystal world, reissued in a vibrant kaleidoscope of colours ranging from opalescent lustre to deep amber and Persepolis blue. Its significance is cemented by its presence in prestigious auctions and museums worldwide, where it is studied as a masterclass in glass chemistry and mold-making. Beyond its technical merit, the fish has become a universal symbol of abundance and tranquility, continuing to captivate new generations of collectors who see it not just as a figurine, but as a timeless link to the golden age of French craftsmanship.
