Designer Dive: Marcel Wanders - The Alchemist of Emotion, Craft and Modern Fantasy
Few designers in the 21st century have blended tradition and innovation with as much theatricality and soul as Marcel Wanders. The Dutch-born designer, co-founder of the influential design label Moooi, has built a career around defying convention, reimagining ornamentation, restoring romanticism in modern design, and placing emotion at the centre of every object he creates. From porcelain figurines to monumental chandeliers, Wanders crafts more than objects; he builds modern myths through material.

A Design Philosophy Rooted in Emotion and Humanity
Wanders’ approach is grounded in what he calls "design with love", a philosophy that rejects the sterile functionality of minimalism in favour of objects that are emotionally meaningful, sensorially rich, and full of storytelling. He often speaks of design as a tool to elevate the human spirit, crafting work that balances heritage and future, technology and handcraft, serenity and spectacle.
“I want to make design more human, more romantic, more connected to the soul,” says Wanders. “We are not just thinking machines: we feel, we dream, we remember.”
His work challenges the industrial coolness of modernism by celebrating decoration, fantasy, and even excess, but always with purpose. Whether designing furniture, lighting, or ceramics, Wanders invites the user to experience beauty as a portal to memory, wonder, and joy.
Most Renowned Works
Wanders’ global design legacy includes:
Knotted Chair (1996)

A breakthrough piece that fused industrial materials (aramid fibres) with traditional macramé techniques. Lightweight yet structurally strong, it instantly positioned Wanders as a trailblazer of postmodern design.
Moooi Interior Projects

Under Moooi, he has designed fantastical interiors like the Mondrian South Beach Hotel (Miami) and Andaz Amsterdam, blending surrealist elements, historical references, and comfort in layered harmony.

Top Designs for Baccarat
At Baccarat, Wanders brings a bold, architectural energy to the historic French crystal house, while staying reverent to its centuries-old savoir-faire.
New Antique Solar Vase
New Antique Collection
For the 260th anniversary of Baccarat, Marcel Wanders designed new pieces in the New Antique collection. From a precious little candle holder and several delicate and elaborate limited edition huge vases up to 1.4m tall. As per his interest in lighting, the new additions also features small wireless table lamps and suspension chandeliers in the shape of signature bells. This collection showcases Wander's sense of restraint and sensitivity, allowing simple forms to tell a story and fill spaces.
United Crystal Woods

This dreamy, limited-edition forest scene rendered in clear and frosted crystal is one of Baccarat’s most enchanting pieces. It’s a metaphorical piece about connection, growth, and shared beauty. Wanders’ work with Baccarat encapsulates his desire to push traditional materials into new storytelling dimensions, turning crystal from static luxury to dynamic theatre.
Reimagining the historic Harcourt silhouette, originally debuting in 1841 as the "glass of kings", Wanders masterfully balances structural legacy with organic fantasy. The design retains the strict, powerful geometry of the classic flat hexagonal base, but fluidly morphs its traditional six vertical facets into the softly curving, flowing lines of a blossoming tulip calyx. Comprising an exclusive lineup of contemporary lifestyle pieces including a coupe, a bowl, and a presentation plate, the collection's significance lies in how it softens the rigid, centuries-old architectural rigor of Baccarat with a light-hearted, nature-inspired elegance.

The Le Roi Soleil chandelier for Baccarat is a dazzling, theatrical masterpiece that honours the French monarch Louis XIV. Driven by Wanders' vision to wrap old-world majesty into a contemporary form, the collection takes inspiration from the sun king's extravagant legacy and the historic design language of Baccarat’s iconic 19th-century Zénith chandelier. Rather than adhering to the rigid, downward-cascading geometry of traditional light fixtures, Wanders subverts the paradigm by compressing the classic framework into a perfectly balanced, glowing crystal sphere.
Marcel Wanders' Lasting Impact
Wanders' influence lies not just in his objects, but in his worldview. In an age that prizes digital speed and minimalist sameness, he creates space for craftsmanship, beauty, ritual, and human connection. His pieces for Lladró and Baccarat exemplify this blend of sensuality and structure, fantasy and refinement. From playful porcelain characters to grand crystal installations, Wanders consistently reminds the world that design can, and should, delight the heart as much as the mind.
